la pop-up

questions by clyde, answers by me. clyde's the one in the kr•hu hat, and you won't catch me in any of these photos because i was the one behind the camera. we've been friends since middle school, he came up with the questions and handled a big part of the logistics for the pop-up and the brand.

how did the pop-up come together, and how far in advance did planning start?

not very far in advance, honestly. mid-march, me and clyde were at the 12 hours of sebring, the endurance race in central florida, pitching the brand to race teams when devon from @tumuchclothes and mason from @toofar.us texted asking if kr•hu wanted in on their pop-up tour. instant yes. that left a little over two months to get everything made, packed and shipped to la before may 30. huge thanks to mason for letting me ship every pair of sweatpants to his house.

there's a game setup in the middle of the shop. why make people play, not just shop?

a while back i was at a local vintage market and one of the vendors had old video games out on display so people could try them before buying. it kept people at his booth and interested. and who doesn't love video games. no brainer.

what's the story with the porsches out front?

the porsches were beautiful. they belong to the venue owner, he uses the warehouse as storage for his car collection. really cool guy, he even let me park right next to the door to make dropping off supplies easier.

why la for the first one instead of orlando?

my orlando supporters asked the same thing. surprisingly most of the audience is la based, and the best place for a pop-up is wherever the most people will actually pull up. also, a venue this nice doesn't exist in downtown orlando haha.

the line wrapped around the building. did you expect that turnout?

not really. i didn't know how the pop-up was going to operate, or that there even needed to be a line for security reasons. we ran out to target thirty minutes before doors for last minute supplies, got back right at 12 and were shocked at how long it had gotten. that photo is around 45 minutes in and it still wrapped around the side of the building.

favorite moment of the day?

meeting so many people i'd only known through instagram, supporters and other vendors. so cool to finally see them in person.

is this becoming a thing? more cities, or la round two?

can't say too much since a lot isn't confirmed yet, but new york will most likely be next for fashion week. maybe another pop-up, an experience, even a runway. who knows.

a few pairs from the run made it back home with us.

hpd/ugs basketball tournament

kr•hu irl

hpd (@hyperpopdaily) and ugs (@undergroundsound) are two of the biggest pages covering underground music, and last october they put together a basketball tournament for underground artists and content creators. sammy aaron, the organizer, reached out about kr•hu coming in as a main sponsor. after talking it through we landed on a better fit, sponsoring a team and designing their jerseys.

kr•hu irl

the roster kept surprising me. actors like sunny suljic from mid90s, creators like badlandschugs, and on the other side of the ball diamond*, an upcoming artist, running the opposing offense.

the turnaround was three weeks at most, and it showed. the original jersey designs got delayed, so we went with backups from a local printer in la and lost some key details along the way, including the other sponsor names. luckily the kr•hu name stayed on the backs.

the team was 099 dvsn, named by team captain hardrock after one of his unreleased songs. the design direction was his call too. we pitched a lot of ideas back and forth and landed on the final look after many revisions.

we won our game. the event ran less like a bracket and more like every team playing one dedicated matchup, but the result stands. seeing the brand on a court at an event that size was a first for kr•hu, and it made me a lot more open to sponsoring events like this going forward.
